She Said yes...
June 20, 2008, 16:36 EST

Some people ask the question with a cake or a ring. Possibly even a webcomic, power armor or a pile of corpses... Me, I asked with a pixel side-scrolling video game.

As Dom has told me, the way you ask should be true to who you are. Me, I make video games. Hell, I get paid to do it supposedly. So when I asked Jes to marry me, I had spent the last year secretly making a little 8bit game for her. An hour here, an hour there, I slowly put it together in cover of night. It worked out great. Well... it would have been better had the final boss not glitched and got stuck in a wall. ( -_-)

Anyway, here's some more shots of the game. (I will not post a copy of it online. It was made for an audience of one.)

Oh, this had nothing to do with the Bacon Ice Cream, by the way. That's just awesome on it's own.

EDIT: Yeah, the hud is totally stolen from Megaman Z. Should give you an idea of how the game controls.

Through another's Eyes

Dom has crafted my likeness into his latest creation over at Megatokyo. I'm glad my persistent bitching of texture use is appreciated around the house.

Short rants

If you're wondering about the short rants lately, we seem to be having server trouble at the moment, which prevents me from uploading files.

Actually, I think that's a PSX Dual Shock controller in the commercial.

It's my fault this time. Didn't come up with anything funny.

Shirt
May 27, 2008, 04:05 EST

The shirt in the above comic was gift from Dave Stanworth. One day I may wear it in public.

Fanime was a good con. Still, cons wear us the hell out. For one thing, my body can't run on grease and sugar for a whole weekend anymore.

To the Convention-mobile!
May 19, 2008, 15:33 EST

First up, Matt and I will be setting up shop at Fanime this weekend. If you feel like swinging buy and sharing a story, feel free. I will most likely doing my best not to appear socially awkward while Matt surfs on his iPhone. I'll bring my usual sketchpad to do some doodlings.

Second, I'm not sure if Matt really intended for the above comic to happen. But any chance to draw a random bear... well, can't resist. Kinda came out sorta camel like though.

Third, as it has been mentioned, I work at Three Rings. As the job page suggests, we're looking for a 2d/3d artist. Particularly with strong diffuse map skills with a focus of low-poly. If you can honestly look at your own work and feel it can stand toe-to-toe with other similar spec'd, modern games, I want to see your portfolio. Honestly, I'm more interested in applicants with strong, basic art skills as compared to industry experience. However, I don't make the hiring call.

I can be reached through ian(a)threerings.net.

I've done an article I'm pretty happy with over at Kwanzoo.

I don't think I'll ever go back to newspaper work, but it's good to be doing some reporting again.

Thank you, Dom
May 5, 2008, 17:58 EST

I screwed up so Dom stepped in to handle things with his standard arsenal. Much obliged.

When we started 3PS I told myself no guest comics for the first year. At least I was able to do that much.

I thought I had more to say, but I seem to be drawing a blank. Guess we'll chat later.

Ahahahaha
May 5, 2008, 16:41 EST

You knew once we started sharing a house with the guy, this sort of thing would be inevitable. It's kind of like a comic rickroll, isn't it?

The news on my front is that I've got a new steady job at Kwanzoo. I'm overseeing the video game section, so I'll be writing and approving trivia questions as well as writing daily posts on the blog.

It's a user-submitted trivia site, so I'm going to be encouraging collections of questions about niche games. Who knows? Maybe before long we'll have a feature about the dwellings of certain stout, bearded alcoholics.

Request for information!

I have a question about PHPBB, and maybe someone out there knows.

Say you have a site with its own login and password. You want to set up the PHPBB message board so people don't have to register and log in for that separately. How would you go about doing that? If someone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

(This isn't for 3PS or anything comic-related.)

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies. I think we've got a good start now.
