Topatoco's got it.

I am going to APE
September 29, 2009, 23:07 EST

Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, October 1718!

We'll be I'll be at the Topatoco booth on Saturday. Ian won't be able to make it Sunday, so it's just me then. Ian has to work that weekend and can't attend at all, sadly.

Webcomics luminaries at the Topatoco booth will be Jon Rosenberg, Zach Weiner, Emily Horne and Joey Comeau, Chris Hastings and of course Jeff Rowland.

I haven't seen a full list of other webcomics going, but it's a pretty hot lineup. Some people are opting in at the last minute.

Fifteen free samples at the chocolate festival may not seem like much, but by the time most of the crowd has gotten up to #7, one vendor in particular comes into play.

I bought a quart, but I let it get too warm on the way home, and it really did a number on my fart-producing mechanisms.

The conclusion I can draw from my encounter with that stuff is that you need to keep it cold. (A corollary conclusion is that maybe I should do cursory Internet search before I put things in my mouth.)

Synesthesia Documentary
September 23, 2009, 13:27 EST

Still been getting a lot of questions about synesthesia from that comic last month. I just found this video that I think explains it better than I was able to.

SYNESTHESIA, a film by Jonathan Fowler.

Dear Cryptic,
September 18, 2009, 05:57 EST

Hey, you didn't take down the servers till 3am last night, allowing me to get in a good few hours or play time. I'm just going to happily believe you were making a special exception for me. (Let me have my dreams.)

Thanks,
---Edge Mouse

Dear Cryptic,

I'd really like to enjoy your game. In fact, I usually do! But every night since I've opened my account, it seems the servers go down shortly after I start playing.

I realize that 1am PST is probably your lowest traffic time for such things, but I'm just going to assume you hate me.

Love,
---Risu

Please note, I really am enjoying what I get to play of Champions. I will gripe about a few art things though, as game art is kinda my job...

Eye Candy: I got to say, I'm rather surprised at how poorly the game runs on my machine. Even with virtually every slider set at a minimum, I'm still feeling the frames crawl. I guess I'm always disappointed when a new MMO comes out and they aim for high end PCs. Just seems like an unpleasant floodgate in possible users/customers. (Conan, you know what you did.) While I rather like the art style of the game, I am not seeing what would be warranting such power requirements. Surely more can be done with less.

Character creation: I love that you can now save your costume to a neat little image. That's awesome. But can something be done about the lying? The creation screen's aspect ratio is wrong, making your character look wider than it really is. So when you get in the game, your character ends up looking rather skinny. To compensate I've just been fattening up my characters prior to hitting "play".

I like the faces this time around, as a note. I hated CoX's faces and always covered them with masks or scarves. This time there's enough tweaking available and style that you can make some nifty mugs.

(Speaking of masks... I really wasn't able to remake my ninja girl. There's really no options for baggy pants, midrif shirts, or face mask/scarves. All key features of my beloved, purple ragamuffin. Had to make her more modern this time around.)

Not actually posted On Labor Day

As you can imagine, this comic was for last Monday. That week kinda kicked my ass though. Lots to do, little mental fortitude to keep it all in line.

Thanks to Detective Wanda Jackson, Matt already knows what synesthesia is, but is under the impression that it's some sort of superpower.

Synesthesia is a sorta red color.
August 31, 2009, 03:16 EST

I guess I never mentioned it to Matt because I often forget that it exists. Mind you, my 'seeing colors where letters should be' isn't so intense that it inhibits my reading, I am convinced it's a root cause for my early failures at the written language in school, though.

I was surprised, however, when it came up in conversation at work one day. There's a couple of my coworkers on the art team that also see letters that way. The other members of the team just think we're weird.

When I first became aware that this was going on with my brain I tried to see if it was just some subconscious thing triggered by early learning. Like the Letter People or something. I discovered two things from that theory upon further exploration: One, that the letter people are all red, and couldn't be the source. And Two, they scare the crap out of me.

It wasn't till around late high school that the concept was truly explained to me via the interwebs.

Unrelated Cool Links:

Machine Flower - Hey, I found out a coworker's wife draws a pretty nice web comic. Check it.

War Photographer Video - Samurai Jack meets metal band vikings music video.

Ultimate Muscle Roller Legend - Possibly NSFW, really, I don't know what to say about this one.

Happy Birthday Matt

I'd think of something clever to say about this, but that's what you're supposed to help me with.

Anyway, again, Happy Birthday my friend.

Connecticon Linkfence

Talked a bunch with David Willis, which was neat because I've been reading his comics for about ten years now.

Met KC Green. He taught me how to drawwwwwwwwwww.

The Stevens Boy ranted at our table about free things.

Yuko did a Photoshop panel with Ian using the last panel of her guest comic for Jeph, and it was hilarious every time the text came back into view.

Chris Malone gave me a pretty sweet necklace.

Me and Dave Shabet totally rolled some dudes at bowling, due to him being a good bowler and me keeping the ball mostly out of the gutter. (Other zombie artist Jenny Romanchuk couldn't make it.

Other people I talked to, or shook hands with, or didn't introduce myself to because they looked kind of busy and I don't have a very high opinion of myself, or meant to talk to more but didn't, just missed entirely, or otherwise don't really have a story for: Atomic Robo, Evil Inc., Garanos, Boy on a Stick and Slither, Starslip, VG Cats, CAD, Explosm, Dueling Analogs, Applegeeks, Wasted Talent, Staccato, Dominic Deegan, XKCD, Slackerz, Geist Panik, and there's more under this fairly broad category but I'm going to bed.

We're get'n our gear together to head off to Connecticon however. Hope to see some of you there. I know that I'm really looking forward to seeing George again.

As a side note, damn, I love Maliki. Such a fine art.
