So yeah, Spiral Knights. Retro flavoring meets modern online. Like if Link to the Past joined up with PSO. Also known as, 'The reason the site has been dead this last month.' Pretty much, if I'm awake, I've been working on this game. I've personally put a lot of love in to the creation of it, and have high hopes for its success.

I've been asked quite a bit since the announcement what my involvement is on the project. But first, here's a bit of a back story;

Three some years ago the project was started by my friend Nick. He gathered an amazing engineer and myself serving as the art lead. The three man team has since expanded and for the majority of the project's life we were floating at around seven strong. We've kicked a lot off ass and made fewer mistakes over the three years but we're almost ready to step up, and I'm both excited and terrified.

So, as I said, small team. What this means is that I've worn a lot of hats through out the project. I designed the UI, with every danged icon in it. (UI designing is so boring...) I also concepted, modeled, textured, animated, scripted, and built the FX for every single weapon in the game. The same goes for the majority of the equipment and creatures to date. Combat scripting included. (You know that mender that keeps raising your enemies? Yeah, my bad, but I'm not sorry. I dig those guys.)

The environments were handled by 'Boswick', a superb artist that only needs the slightest direction before he's able to produce amazing work with minimal resources, a great boon to the project. (He also made the Chromolisks... which are also awesome and make me jealous of his animation skills.)

I love it at Three Rings. They give me far more creative control than some one with my title tends to have, and I get to try my hand in not strictly art related things. I got to say the tools the engineers have written are amazingly adaptable, and allow me to do far more than a mere artist should have control over at a production level.

You can find me online by my usual Three Rings handles; Cherub and Blackhat. The later tends to be my 'official business' handle. Feel free to wave if you see me, but I'll probably be zoned out trying to concept the next armor set. But I hope you thoroughly enjoy your stay in my little digital world.

You can also check out the couple wallpapers I did for the official site if you like. (And if you happen to watch the trailer of peak at the screens, any time you see a knight with a sky-blue highlight color, that's me.)

I've had a lot of fun making this game, though I'm not done working yet. So expect continued slowness around here. Release isn't till April 4th after all.

Sega and Three Rings have been giving sites an allotment of invites to Spiral Knights in advance of the 4/4 release date. If you want to find them, I've found the best way is to search Twitter for "Spiral Knights" and look for a post by some news outlet.

They're going pretty fast in some cases. Ars Technica used up its allotment in a few hours, but GameZone's link is still working as of this post.

The comic updates pretty much stopped this month as I became overwhelmed with crunch time at my job. I'm still crunching like a mad man, but at least now I can share a little bit of what I'm working on.

Spiral Knights

Awwwww yeah.

As you can see, we've transitioned over to a Wordpress/Comicpress site.

Most of the old news rants aren't loaded in yet, but we'll be filling those in, along with some searchability stuff.

I'm drinking Limoncello.

Jes stepped in for this one as a birthday gift to me. I thought it was sweet of her. Thank you!

Oh Minecraft. I've played you so much, and have enjoyed many a lost evening, you are amusing to say the least. But damn, your art is terrible. Don't get me wrong, the retro cube-pixel combo is cute and clearly quite catchy, but the animations? Spare a bit of those millions you've made and invest in a good contract animator.

Seriously, this isn't even an aesthetic thing. The animations, or lack of in the case of attack animations, detract from the feeling of immersion, and even worse make combat unsatisfying and clunky. What's that? A skeleton is going to shoot me? Oh wait, it already did because there's no wind-up cue. Just two out stretched arms looking for a hug.

Also, why isn't this mod part of the default game? Not only does it make the world look nicer, it makes the environment easier to parse. At least work in some linear mipmapping to stop the grass from looking like green static in the distance...

Now, pardon me, but I need to see a man about a mine cart booster track.
